In the heart of Toronto there's a crowded vertical city of children and families from around the world. Stacked in monotonous rows of concrete apartments, this vertical city speaks a hundred tongues. It is home to people who are new to Canada, its customs and even each other. It is called St. James Town.
Rearing a family in this new world is a challenging task, often stressful and depressing for both parents and children. To help the children of these families bridge into their new future, the Growing Together Project was developed by the C.M. Hincks Centre for Children's Mental Health.
Growing Together strengthens the mental health of children, adolescents, families and communities through exemplary direct service, caring consultation, education, research and advocacy.
The project is a joint venture between the Hincks Centre for Children's Mental Health and the city of Toronto Department of Public Health, both of which provide staffing. In addition, partnerships with other agencies such as The Toronto Board of Education and Cabbage Town Youth Centre, an Advisory Committee and a number of volunteers and students have allowed a wide range of services to be provided for families with young children living in the area.
This constant collaboration is a central characteristic of the Growing Together project.
