WINNER FOR 2000
The Film Circuit, a non-profit division of TIFFG, is a grassroots initiative which promotes and distributes largely Canadian film programmes to more than 60 Canadian local communities. These activities ensure cultural access to residents, promotes national artists and product, and generates significant economic benefits for both the Canadian film industry and local community.
Annually, the Film Circuit works with 1,000 volunteers to present Canadian film programmes to over 140,000 residents and generating new revenues exceeding $1 million to be re-invested in local communities.
The Film Circuit is mandated to:
-ensure cultural access to traditionally under-served Canadian communities;
-empower and support Canadian communities through active participation and collaboration with artists, cultural organizations and local residents;
-build new audience for Canadian film; and
-generate new revenues which are re-invested in local communities and Canadian film industry.
All ticket revenues generated on the Film Circuit are split equally between the Canadian film distributor, the local exhibitor, and the community. Local community groups utilize this new money in a variety of ways, ranging from establishing film scholarships for local students to purchasing film resources for local schools and libraries.
The Circuit, through its partnerships with distributors, exhibitors and community groups, has created a successful distribution network for Canadian and independent film in Canada. The programme has introduced Canadian talent to audiences across Canada, which has built a star system of our own in Canada.
