Education is an essential part of Esprit's activities. Toward a Living Art program exposes public and high school students to the process of creating and performing new orchestral compositions. It promotes a genuine interest in the art of music, fostering future audiences and inspiring future artists.
The program fosters a strong Canadian musical identity and is a unique approach to education. The program has five basic components and addresses shortcomings in the public system of music education while utilizing existing resources. Students gain a view of Canadian music and its creation not readily available. The different environments of artists from around Canada plus unique social and ethnic backgrounds are reflected.
The program puts a wide range of students, non-musicians and young musicians of varying skills in direct contact with leading Canadian composers and performers, involving them in a process of producing and presenting brand new works. This direct experience leaves an indelible impression on the minds of students.
