The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program provides services to persons isolated from the general community. St. John believes that anyone can benefit physically or mentally through regular contact with the unconditional love of a dog.
Working through community based divisions across Canada, St. John Ambulance recognizes many people are destined to spend years isolated from their families, often in hospitals, seniors' residences or nursing homes.
The St. John Therapy Dog Program has been established in hospitals, palliative care units, day care centres, senior residences, rest homes, special needs' schools, and psychiatric hospitals where people are generally restricted from having pets.
The Therapy Dog Program takes both a volunteer and their dog into organizations on a regular, weekly basis. Through regular visiting, a bond is created between the client, dog and volunteer.
