CHEERS (COMMUNICATION and HUMOUR, EFFECTIVE EXERCISES in RELATING to SELF and SOCIETY) is a program developed for consumers. The program is humour based and teaches communication, self esteem, and empowerment through the understanding and use of humour. While using humour to affect illness it is not a new concept, teaching the concepts and discipline of humour and comedy to provide skill development and paradigm shifts in thinking is revolutionary.
CHEERS is a seventeen week course provided to individuals who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Throughout the duration of the course individuals are given training and experience in creative writing, team work, public speaking, and looking at things differently. Through these experiences self esteem is heightened, self empowerment escalates, and individuals are learning valuable skills to assist them in day-to-day communications.
