HONOURABLE MENTION FOR 1997

Santropol Roulant's innovative program is Intergenerational Meals on Wheels (IMW). The underlying purpose of IMW is to address serious social problems facing seniors and others living at home with a loss of autonomy, while facilitating intensely rewarding volunteer experiences for youth.
The objectives of the program are to engage young people in intergenerational community work through Meals on Wheels via bicycle and walking routes, to address poor nutrient intake and ease social isolation among seniors, to foster harmony between diverse generations, and to facilitate skills development for youth.
IMW innovations target a multitude of benefactors that include youth, seniors, people living with chronic illness or disability, hospital outpatients, Canada's health care system, education, the environment, taxpayers, and other community services interested in youth activism.
