The Yellow Fish Road Program is designed to educate the public on the hazards of indiscriminate dumping of unwanted household chemicals down storm drains, because of their direct linkage to the nearest water courses. These dangerous practices can harm aquatic life living in our rivers, streams and lakes and adversely affect our drinking water.
Local volunteer groups such as school classes, Girl Guides and Scouts paint a yellow fish symbol beside the storm drain to serve as a gentle reminder that the only substance that should enter the drain is excessive rain water. A yellow fish-shaped door hanger notice is then distributed to homes and businesses explaining the concept of the program.
The Yellow Fish Road Program complements and reinforces the concept of existing environmental projects in communities, such as recycling and compost programs.
