The Teen Sex Info Line aims to improve the acceptability and use of sexuality information by teenagers using the peer-to-peer counselling model. In addition, the program provides training teenage-to-teenage telephone counsellors on Planned Parenthood's counselling line during after-school and early evening hours.
Fifteen teenage volunteers are recruited and screened by the PPT Volunteer Coordinator. They receive an intensive three-month in-service training provided by PPT staff. Information is provided on female and male anatomy, conception and pregnancy, birth control methods, sexually transmitted diseases and sexual identity. Skill development includes listening skills, non-judgemental counselling, confidentiality and relationship negotiation. After the initial training, ongoing training and supervision is provided. A counselling coordinator is present to supervise the young people during their 4 pm to 8 pm shift. The coordinator is an experienced adult who helps to screen calls, offer support and guidance, and backup in case of emergency. A secondary but equally positive result of this approach is the creation of a pool of informed and motivated young people, who can act as opinion leaders in their communities as well as on the PPT's telephone counselling line.
