HONOURABLE MENTION FOR 1998

The mission of the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 is to provide a learning environment that promotes and
fosters the growth of each student’s maximum potential and provides an opportunity for the individual student
to develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary for participation in a global and pluralistic society. Sisler High School’s mission statement "Education for a Lifetime" reflects and supports the division’s philosophy.
Sisler High School’s Self-Directed Learning Program is committed to partnering with clients to assist them in constructing customized educational pathways to productive and satisfying futures. This philosophy is supported by independent study, flexibly academics, and personal management skill-building.
There are three components to the Program:
Self-Directed Learning - a structured yet flexible way for students to study their academic subjects independently;
Career Exploration - short-term (job shadowing) and long-term (career internship) placements; and
The S.T.E.P.S. (Skills in Technology for Employment through Partnerships with Sisler) Program - an unpaid Career Internship Program that establishes a structured pathway from either school to work, or post-secondary training in highly-employable fields.
Through the collaborative efforts of community, business, educators and students, our young people are becoming self-sufficient, productive, caring and responsible adults in an ever-changing, technology-driven, global society.
